How to show up in ChatGPT and AI search answers
Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews before they search. Here is how AI picks which businesses to mention, and how to be one.
A growing number of buyers start with a question instead of a search. “What is the best med spa near me for lip filler?” “Which law firm handles car accident cases in my city?” They type it into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google, and get a short answer that names a few businesses.
If your business is not in that answer, you are not even on the list. Here is how AI tools decide who to mention, and what you can do about it.
How AI answers are put together
AI search tools do not invent their recommendations from nothing. They pull from what is already on the web: business websites, Google Business Profiles, review sites, directories, news and articles that compare options. Then they summarize what those sources agree on.
That means two things matter most: what your own website says clearly, and what other trusted sources say about you.
1. Make your website easy to understand and quote
AI tools favour pages that answer a question directly. Vague, clever copy is hard to summarize. Clear copy is easy to quote.
- Say exactly what you do, for whom and where, near the top of each page.
- Give each service its own page instead of one long list.
- Add short, honest answers to the questions customers actually ask, such as cost ranges, timelines and who it is for.
- Use headings that match those questions.
2. Add structured data
Structured data, or schema markup, is code that tells search engines and AI tools what a page is about: your business name, location, services, reviews and FAQs. It removes guesswork.
What to add first: Organization or LocalBusiness schema on your homepage, Service schema on service pages, and FAQ schema where you answer common questions.
3. Keep your business details consistent everywhere
If your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page and directory listings show different names, addresses or services, AI tools are less confident about who you are. Make sure your core details match everywhere, and keep your Google Business Profile complete and active.
4. Earn mentions on other sites
AI answers lean heavily on what others say about you. A business that appears in local guides, industry lists, comparison articles and reviews is far more likely to be named than one that only talks about itself.
- Ask happy customers for reviews on Google and the review sites that matter in your industry.
- Get listed in relevant directories and associations.
- Contribute expert answers or articles to local and industry publications.
5. Publish content that answers real questions
Articles that genuinely answer buyer questions, with clear structure and specific detail, give AI tools something worth citing. Focus on the questions people ask right before they buy, not generic tips.
6. Check where you stand
Ask the questions your customers would ask in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and note which businesses get named. That shows you who you are competing with in AI answers and which sources they are being pulled from.
Good SEO is still the foundation
None of this replaces SEO. AI tools still rely on websites that are fast, well structured and trusted. Think of AI search as the next layer on top of strong SEO: the same clear pages, structured data and reputation help you rank in Google and get mentioned in AI answers.
